There are a few things you should know before you head out for that drink after work or that big party that you have been looking forward to. Even though you may think it’s only a few drinks and that you deserve to have a few you should keep these important things in mind.

Scientists have researched and proven that even a small amount of alcohol will increase your strength and endurance although these benefits will be short lived. After 15-30 mins depending on the person, the problems start to arise. All the negative side effects easily out way the positive effects associated with drinking and exercise. Alcohol is a poison and no matter how you look at the situation you will be damaging/harming your body.

The negative side effects are the reverse of the positive but worse. Your strength, endurance, recovery time and aerobic capability will de dramatically reduced and impaired. The worst part is that the ability to metabolize fat and build muscle will be all useless and for nothing. Excessive use of alcohol will have a long term effect on your nervous system and your brain. Even with short term use nerve muscle interaction can be reduced which will result in a loss of strength. Not good if you’re a body builder or power lifter especially.
Alcohol damages the blood cells within the body; with alcohol users muscle inflammation is very common. Over a period of time these cells may die which will result in less functional muscle contractions. Due to the damage of these cells you will be left with more soreness in your muscle after you have trained which means you will be out of action recuperating.

When drinking alcohol your heart and circulatory system will be affected as well. You will notice a reduction in your endurance capabilities and your heat loss will surely increase due to the alcohol simulating your blood vessels to dilate. The loss in heat can make your muscles slower and weaker during contractions.
Now if you want to release insulin to increase the metabolism of glycogen, which spares fat and makes the loss of fat very hard then go and have a few drinks…due to alcohol interfering with the absorbtion of several key nutrients, you can also become anaemic and deficient with B type vitamins.

The worst organ to get damaged by alcohol is the first one it travels through… the liver. The more you drink the more your liver has to work which in turn puts huge amounts of stress on it. Excessive binge drinking can seriously damage your liver and liver cells.

Another organ which takes a good beating when you drink is your kidneys. During the diuretic action your hormones are secreted. This can lead to heightened water retention and no one that trains will want this to happen.

I’m not saying do not drink alcohol, as much of us like a good tipple every now and then, but drink in moderation, don’t binge drink it’s seriously bad. Do not drink if you intend to train on the same day or even the next day, just a small amount alcohol can impair you strength and endurance. The worst part is that the ability to metabolize fat and build muscle will be all useless and for nothing. Be Safe and Train Hard.
